In a powerful collaboration aimed at shaping South Africa’s future in science, engineering, and technology, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has partnered with the Sasol Foundation to offer the CSIR-Sasol Foundation Bursary Programme for 2026. This initiative is designed to financially support full-time, unemployed students who wish to pursue qualifications in high-demand fields that align with national development priorities.

This comprehensive bursary programme goes beyond just financial assistance—it’s a strategic investment in developing young talent and increasing the representation of women, black individuals, and people with disabilities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

Who Is Eligible to Apply?

The bursary programme is open to two primary groups:

Current Grade 12 Learners

Applicants must:

  • Be South African citizens;
  • Plan to enrol full-time at a South African public university in 2026;
  • Achieve a minimum of Level 5 in English, Level 6 in Mathematics, and Level 6 in Physical Science.

Current University Students

Applicants must:

  • Be South African citizens;
  • Intend to continue full-time university studies in 2026;
  • Have passed all registered courses from their previous academic year.

The CSIR-Sasol Foundation bursary supports qualifications in key areas identified as national priorities. These include:

  • Mechatronic Engineering
  • Computer Engineering
  • Electronic Engineering
  • Computer Science
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Material Flow Analysis
  • Process Engineering / Life Cycle Assessment
  • Information Technology
  • Data Science
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Genetics / Cell Biology
  • System Engineering

Required Supporting Documents

To ensure a valid application, the following documents must be submitted:

  • An updated Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • A certified copy of your South African ID
  • Your latest academic record
  • Grade 11 final results (for Grade 12 learners)

Failure to attach these documents will result in your application being null and void.

This is a fully funded bursary covering all aspects of university study:

  • Registration and tuition fees
