The Rand West City Local Municipality, in collaboration with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), has launched an exciting new EPWP Youth Graduate Work Opportunity Programme. This initiative aims to empower unemployed graduates through meaningful work placements in the environmental sector while addressing local environmental challenges.

As part of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), this graduate opportunity is more than just a job — it’s a bridge to long-term employability. By offering structured work experience, the programme helps young South Africans gain the technical and soft skills needed to enter and thrive in the green economy.

A Collaborative Effort for Sustainable Development

Rand West City Local Municipality, situated in Gauteng, is a community-focused local government striving to uplift its youth. By partnering with the DFFE, the municipality contributes to national goals of environmental protection, job creation, and youth empowerment. The DFFE plays a critical role in implementing the Environmental Protection and Infrastructure Programme (EPIP), under which this youth employment initiative falls.

 

 

Who Can Apply?

The EPWP Youth Graduate Work Opportunity is open to unemployed graduates who:

  • Are South African citizens aged between 18 and 35
  • Have completed a tertiary qualification (diploma or degree) in Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Waste Management, Geography, Environmental Education, or a related field
  • Reside in or around Rand West City Local Municipality
  • Are passionate about environmental sustainability and community development

Roles and Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be placed in roles where they will support projects such as:

  • Rehabilitation of degraded environments
  • Waste and recycling initiatives
  • Community awareness campaigns
  • Climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts
  • Environmental compliance monitoring
  • Education and Awareness
  • Landscaping
  • Nature Conservation
  • Urban Greening
  • By law Enforcement

These positions will help participants gain real-world experience while making a measurable difference in their communities.

 

 

Duration and Stipend

The work opportunity runs for 12 months, and participants receive a daily stipend (R247.50) in line with EPWP norms. While this is a temporary role, the experience gained can open doors to full-time employment in the environmental or public sector.
