In a powerful move to bridge the gap between classroom learning and workplace readiness, the UMhlosinga Development Agency (UMDA) has introduced an invaluable opportunity for aspiring tourism professionals through its N6 Tourism Management TVET Placement Programme in partnership with CATHSSETA. Located in the northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal, UMDA plays a pivotal role in local economic development and youth empowerment within the Umkhanyakude District. This placement programme is one of their latest initiatives aimed at nurturing the next generation of tourism professionals in South Africa.
Empowering Tourism Graduates Through Practical Exposure
The tourism sector, especially in scenic regions like KwaZulu-Natal, has enormous potential for economic growth and job creation. However, many graduates with N6 Tourism Management certificates find themselves stranded due to a lack of practical experience, which is a requirement for obtaining a full national diploma. UMDA’s TVET Placement Programme addresses this challenge by offering structured, work-based learning opportunities to qualifying students who have completed their theoretical N6 studies at a recognized TVET college.
Participants are placed at various tourism-related establishments across the Umkhanyakude District Municipality — including game reserves, lodges, tourism offices, cultural centers, and community tourism organizations — where they gain invaluable hands-on experience. The programme typically spans 18 months, aligning with the minimum practical requirement set by the Department of Higher Education and Training for diploma certification.
