In a concerted effort to reduce poverty and alleviate unemployment, the Nkomazi Local Municipality continues to play a pivotal role in implementing the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) — a flagship national initiative aimed at creating short- to medium-term work opportunities for South Africans. Rooted in government’s broader strategy for socio-economic upliftment, the EPWP is designed not only to provide income relief but also to deliver real skills development, work experience, and improved community infrastructure.
What is the EPWP?
The Expanded Public Works Programme is a government-led initiative that focuses on providing temporary public sector employment opportunities to unemployed and underemployed South Africans. Participants are engaged in projects related to infrastructure development, environment and culture, social services, and non-state sectors. Through these projects, they gain skills and work experience that improve their chances of gaining long-term employment or starting their own businesses.
Nkomazi Municipality’s EPWP Approach
Located in the Ehlanzeni District of Mpumalanga, Nkomazi Local Municipality has embraced the EPWP as a strategic tool to confront local challenges of unemployment, poverty, and lack of work experience among youth and women. By integrating EPWP into municipal service delivery and development projects, the municipality ensures that community members not only benefit from the results of infrastructure upgrades, maintenance work, and environmental services but are also employed during the implementation process.
