The Ngqushwa Local Municipality, located in the Amathole District of the Eastern Cape, is opening doors of opportunity for aspiring finance professionals through its Finance Management Grant Internship Programme. This initiative, backed by the National Treasury, is designed to build capacity in local government financial management while providing invaluable practical experience to unemployed graduates in the finance field.
BUILDING CAPACITY THROUGH PRACTICAL LEARNING:
The Finance Management Grant Internship Programme (FMGIP) is a strategic intervention aimed at addressing the shortage of financial management skills within the public sector. It forms part of the government’s broader commitment to good governance, transparency, and efficient financial administration at local government level.
The Ngqushwa Municipality’s participation in this programme is a strong indication of its dedication to upskilling the youth, transforming the public sector workforce, and strengthening the financial backbone of local governance. Interns selected under this programme are placed within the municipality’s financial departments, where they are mentored and trained on various key areas, including:
- Budgeting and financial reporting
- Supply Chain Management (SCM)
- Revenue management
- Audit and internal controls
- Asset management
- Expenditure tracking
WHO SHOULD APPLY?
- The candidate should hold as a minimum, a three (3) year bachelor’s degree or National Diploma with majors in Internal Auditing, Accounting including Risk Management and/or Auditing.
- The intern will sign an internship agreement which is in addition to the employment contract.
- The effect of the agreement is to ensure commitment to the programme which requires, amongst other, full participation in the educational and workplace assignments and observance of policies and procedures.
- The candidate must be between the ages of 21 and 35.
Applicants must demonstrate:
- Strong analytical and numerical skills
- Basic knowledge of municipal finance systems
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Willingness to learn in a public service environment
DURATION AND STIPEND:
The internship typically runs for a fixed-term of 24 months, offering participants a well-rounded exposure to the workings of municipal financial management. Interns receive a monthly stipend (R 91 275.60 per annum) which not only provides financial support but also fosters a sense of independence and responsibility.
