How to become a Transportation Electrician in South Africa
1. Meet the qualification entry requirement. SAQA ID 117042 requires an NQF Level 1 qualification with Mathematics and Science.
2. Complete occupational learning and workplace experience. Training covers automotive electrical principles, batteries, starting and charging systems, electronic controls, diagnostics and practical workplace modules.
3. Complete the external assessment/trade-test route. The qualification is a trade pathway and requires completion of the prescribed knowledge, practical and work-experience components before external assessment.
4. Develop diagnostic expertise. Automotive Electricians increasingly work with advanced electronic, networking, engine-management and driver-assistance systems.

Qualification: Occupational Certificate: Transportation Electrician (Automotive Electrician), SAQA ID 117042, NQF Level 4, 554 credits.
Entry requirement: NQF Level 1 qualification with Mathematics and Science.
Status: SAQA records this qualification as having passed its registration end date on 28 May 2025. The older SAQA ID 97388 also passed its registration end date and was replaced by 117042.
