Plumbers install, maintain, test and repair water supply, drainage, sewerage, sanitary ware and rainwater systems. The occupation combines practical pipework, fault finding, measurements, drawings, building-related work, safety requirements and compliance with relevant standards and procedures.

How to become a Plumber in South Africa
1. Meet the current qualification entry requirement. National Occupational Certificate: Plumber (SAQA ID 124445) requires an NQF Level 1 qualification with Mathematical Literacy and Communication.
2. Complete the occupational programme. The qualification combines knowledge, practical skills and workplace experience covering water systems, drainage, sanitary ware, rainwater systems, safety and workplace practice.
3. Complete the EISA. A valid Statement of Results confirming completion of the required modules is needed for admission to the External Integrated Summative Assessment.
4. Build experience and comply with industry requirements. Qualified plumbers can work across construction, maintenance, building services and related plumbing environments.
Official Requirements
Current qualification: National Occupational Certificate: Plumber, SAQA ID 124445, NQF Level 4, 395 credits.
Entry requirement: NQF Level 1 qualification with Mathematical Literacy and Communication.
Assessment: Competence in the External Integrated Summative Assessment is required for certification; learners require a valid Statement of Results confirming achievement of the required knowledge, practical and work-experience modules.
Status: SAQA records qualification 124445 as registered from 3 June 2025 to 3 June 2030. The older Occupational Certificate: Plumber (SAQA ID 91782) passed its registration end date on 30 December 2025.
