How to become a General Accountant in South Africa
There is more than one legitimate route into accounting. Learners may enter through accounting degrees, diplomas or occupational pathways depending on the role and professional designation sought. A current occupational route is the Advanced Occupational Certificate: General Accountant, SAQA 125142, NQF Level 6. Professional-body designations can have additional education, assessment and experience requirements.
Official Requirements
There is no single qualification that every South African General Accountant must hold simply to use the broad occupational title. Requirements depend on the employer, duties and whether a protected/professional designation or statutory sign-off function is involved. SAQA 125142 is specifically designed to prepare a learner to function as a General Accountant and is currently registered to 13 November 2030.
