How to become a Adoption Social Worker in South Africa
1. Complete a prescribed social work qualification. A Bachelor of Social Work is the normal professional degree route. Edupstairs uses SAQA ID 9093 as one current pilot example, but several institutions have their own registered BSW records.
2. Complete required practical education. Social work education includes supervised field instruction and students are subject to professional registration requirements during training.
3. Register with SACSSP. Registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions is a legal prerequisite to practise as a social worker.
Official Requirements
Qualification: Applicants for professional registration must hold a prescribed social work qualification recognised for registration purposes. SACSSP registration documentation specifically requires proof of the social work qualification and academic record.
Professional registration: A person may not practise as a social worker without registration with SACSSP. Students studying social work are also subject to student-registration requirements.
Pilot qualification: Bachelor of Social Work, SAQA ID 9093, NQF Level 8, 480 credits, currently registered through 30 June 2027.
