The National Qualifications Framework organises recognised learning outcomes into levels so users can understand complexity, progression and qualification relationships.
1
What an NQF level shows
An NQF level describes the complexity and depth of learning. It does not, by itself, tell you the programme duration, career value or whether an opportunity is currently open.
2
Levels 1 to 4
These levels generally cover foundational and further education outcomes. Matric is commonly associated with NQF Level 4, while occupational and vocational qualifications can also sit at these levels.
3
Levels 5 to 7
These levels include higher certificates, diplomas, advanced occupational learning and degree-level outcomes, depending on the qualification type and registering body.
4
Levels 8 to 10
These levels cover advanced postgraduate learning, including honours-level, master’s-level and doctoral-level outcomes. Not every SETA catalogue contains programmes at every level.
